Critters from the New Holiday Mini

Card created by Lianne Carper using the Merry Crittermas stamp set and Candy Cane Christmas designer paper by Stampin' Up!Well if you haven’t viewed the new 2010-2011 Holiday Mini Catalog yet, you’re in for a treat!  Here’s a cute little card made with the new Merry Crittermas stamp set.  This is such a sweet little set, full of all sorts of little woodland creatures decked out for the holidays.

If you zoom in, you should be able to see all of the sparkle on this little card!  I used Smooch Spritz on the scalloped circle, designer label and the snowflake.  I then used some of the Shimmer Paint on the textured snowflakes created by the new Northern Flurry Textured Embossing Folder on the Candy Cane Christmas designer paper.

Hope you like it!

More Elegant Soiree

General

Cards created by Lianne Carper for the Albemarle Nursing Home using the Watercolor Trio, Word Play and Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp sets and the Elegant Soiree designer paper by Stampin' Up!Today I’m back with the last card that the ladies at the Albemarle Nursing Home will be creating next month.  This one is the simplest of the three.  I try to vary the levels of difficulty for them.  We don’t want them to get bored and only do super simple cards, but then we don’t want to overwhelm them with three difficult cards either.

The great thing about this one and the first one, they can change up the sentiment if they’d like since it uses the Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set and there are TONS of different sentiments in that set.

This one also uses the new Elegant Lines Textured Impressions Embossing Folder which coordinates perfectly with this set.  And although it’s not meant to go with it, I think the Beautiful Wings Embosslit butterfly goes with looks pretty darn good with it as well.

Below you can see all three of the cards they’ll be making!  I think it’s a well rounded set!

A Little Tropical Party – part 1

General, Tutorials

Stepped up versions by Lianne Carper of cards created to be taught at the nursing home using the Tropical Party stamp set by Stampin' Up! Over the next three days, I’m going to be showing you three different cards created with the Tropical Party stamp set by Stampin’ Up! which debuted in the 2010 Summer Mini Catalog.  It took me a little while to warm up to this set, but now I’m lovin’ it!  And I haven’t even used my favorite stamps in it – the flowers!

The cards I’m going to be showing you are stepped up versions of cards that Brenda will be teaching at the nursing home next month.  I’ll let you know what I’ve changed (or stepped up) from their version.

Stepped up versions by Lianne Carper of cards created to be taught at the nursing home using the Tropical Party stamp set by Stampin' Up!Today’s card reminds me of the jungle.  It’s perfect for a masculine birthday but would work well for a feminine birthday as well.

How I stepped it up.  For starters, I added some of the Log Cabin Smooch Spritz to the Kraft (soon to be called Crumb Cake) background matte.  Just a few light squirts is all you need.  Next is the addition of twine.  Rather than twine, their card has the happy birthday sentiment lower centered in the Old Olive Island Oasis designer paper strip but still overlapping the stamped palm tree image.  Last but not least, I have popped up the stamped image on Dimensionals whereas theirs is flat and glued directly to the card front.

I hope you like today’s card.  If you’d like to make your own, I have uploaded instructions for you to download from our ResourcesProject Sheets section

Anniversary Sketch Card and a Discussion About Adhesives

General, Sketch Challenges

Card Swap - 1410A - Anniversary card created by Lianne Carper using the I {Heart} Hearts stamp set along with several heart punches by Stampin' Up!

Well it’s a good thing my husband doesn’t read my blog because this is the card that I am giving him tomorrow for our 19 year anniversary.  I used the sketch from Brenda’s Birthday Sketch Challenge for this card and really like the way it turned out.  I wasn’t sure I’d be able to pull off a lovey-dovey heart card in masculine colors.  I don’t think it’s too frilly and I think he’ll like it just fine!

Card Swap - 1410A - Anniversary card created by Lianne Carper using the I {Heart} Hearts stamp set along with several heart punches by Stampin' Up!I’m also planning on using this card for the Anniversary or Wedding card swap coming up here at CARDScraps.  You have until 4/12/10 to sign up, so that will give you plenty of time to get a card made!

I didn’t make a project sheet on this one because the layout and dimensions are so similar to the project sheet I made on yesterday’s card which is posted in the Project Sheets section.

Now, I want to talk about the adhesives that I used in my card.  I realized when I was making my supply list for what I used in my card that I had used several different adhesives.  I tend to do that quite a bit, and the other day, my daughter asked me why I needed so many glues.  So I figured I would run through the adhesives today and tell you my favorites and what I use them for.

image

Anywhere Glue Stick
#104045 – $3.95 for a pack of 2

I used the glue stick on just about all of the assembly, including all of the layering as well as the larger hearts.  Many people don’t like using glue sticks (including Brenda) because you end up with it on your fingers and if you’re not careful, you get it on the fronts of your card stock as well.  With a little bit of practice though, you learn how to handle card stock with glue on it and as long as you keep a napkin close (or wear jeans..lol), you can wipe your fingers off regularly.  I just feel more confident that my card isn’t going to come apart when I’ve got the entire surface of my card stock glued rather than just the edges as typically done with SNAIL adhesive.  Not to mention, it’s very cost effective!

image

2-Way Glue Pen
#100425 – $3.50

When it’s time to glue down tiny pieces, I find it much easier to grab my 2-way glue pen.  The chisel tip allows you to put glue on the thinnest surfaces and it sticks so well and dries quickly.  On this card, I used it to glue down the small punched hearts as well as the Kraft scalloped heart outline.

Card Swap - 1410A - Anniversary card created by Lianne Carper using the I {Heart} Hearts stamp set along with several heart punches by Stampin' Up!Here’s a close-up of the “heart-work”.  I love the little Kraft heart frame made by using the Scalloped Heart of Hearts Embosslit and then punching it out with the Large Heart Punch.  It wasn’t planned – I was just punching it out so I could overlay the Kraft heart onto the Night of Navy heart.  But once I punched the heart out with the large heart punch and saw the adorable little heart frame it left, I knew I had to use it on my card as well.

SNAIL Adhesive
#104332 – $6.95

This is Brenda’s favorite for assembly as I’m sure it is for many other crafters.  It’s quick and easy to use and there’s no mess involved.  However, I tend to use it more for attaching ribbon more than anything else.  I don’t normally apply it to the entire ribbon unless a ribbon just really isn’t wanting to stay in place.  I usually just use it on the ends that wrap around to the back side.  As you know, I pretty much use ribbon on every card so my SNAIL gets a workout too.

image

Dotto
#103305 – $12.95

This is the most expensive of the lot, but I think it’s well worth it.  When I’m trying to figure out where I want all of my different layers on my card, I put a very small amount of dotto on the back of each piece to hold it in place.  Because it’s REPOSITIONABLE, I can move it from one place to another without problems, but it keeps everything from sliding around while I’m designing the card.  I tend to have all of my pieces cut and “in position” before I ever apply any permanent glue and I can’t stand them moving all around.  I told tend to add this to my supply list since it’s only temporary.  I just wanted you to know that I think it’s an indispensible tool!

Card Swap - 1410A - Anniversary card created by Lianne Carper using the I {Heart} Hearts stamp set along with several heart punches by Stampin' Up!Now, I didn’t use the adhesives below on today’s card, but I wanted to go ahead and talk about them as they each have their uses.

image

Stampin’ Dimensionals
#104430 – $3.95

Oh what would I do without these little gems?  I LOVE dimension on cards, and these give your layers the right amount of POP!  I can’t believe I didn’t use any Dimensionals on today’s card as I reach for these quite often.  Because they’re made of foam and they’re not too thick, they compress and go through the mail quite well.  They’re super easy to cut so if you need a smaller size, simply cut one in half or in quarters.  That’s what I did for the clouds on yesterday’s card.

image

Glue Dots
#103683 Mini Glue Dots – $4.95
#104183 Pop-Up Glue Dots – $3.95

These little things are super-sticky and are fabulous for attaching things like buttons or bows to your card.  The Mini Glue Dots are only 3/16″ so they fit well behind very small objects.  The Pop-Up Glue Dots are quite a bit bigger.  They are approximately 1/2″ and are 1/8″ thick.  Like the Dimensionals, they give your layers dimension but they don’t compress like the foam dimensionals do.  If your card were to get smashed, the card stock would tend to bend around the Pop-Up Glue dot.  However, like I said, these things are super sticky so they’re excellent if you’re attaching something heavy.

image

Sticky Strip
#104294 – $6.95

If you do anything 3-Dimensional like make boxes, bags, etc., you need Sticky Strip.  This stuff is super permanent.  I think the only draw back this stuff has is that you have to cut it with your scissors – you can’t just tear it off.  This is also great for adding micro beads or glitter to your cards.

Stampin’ Up! also sells Sticky Pages which is the same thing although it’s a 12×12 sheet, so you can cut it, punch it or die cut it!  I’ve these on several occasions to make beaded pens!

image

Crystal Effects
#101055 – $6.25

Essentially, I use this to add a shiny dimension to my images.  Just squeeze it out onto your image, spread with a toothpick and set aside to dry.  Now, in my experience, the nozzle will get clogged unless you stick a pin down into the top between uses.  And make sure its a stainless steel pin or it will rust.  Trust me, I know.lol.  However, what some people don’t realize is that this is a fantastic ultra glue.  I used it to create some magnets with glass pebbles recently and they’re awesome!

image

Tombow Multi Purpose Adhesive
#110755 – $3.95

Now, this is probably the glue I reach for the least.  There is nothing wrong with it.  It’s a wonderful liquid glue – especially for adhering to chipboard.  I just don’t do a whole lot of that, so I haven’t used it very much.  Some crafters swear by it though, so maybe I just haven’t attempted to use it on enough of my projects to give a fair shake!

I hope you enjoyed my post today.  If you have any questions, just let me know.

Happy Stamping :)

Just For You – Owl Punch

Uncategorized

Just For You, Teeny Tiney Wishes, Owl Punch art, CARDScraps, Brenda Cook, Stampin' Up!, card

I made up this adorable card for an upcoming “Punches” card swap at CARDScraps. Isn’t the owl just precious!

Cardscraps How I Did It Tutorial Header

Just For You, Teeny Tiney Wishes, Owl Punch art, CARDScraps, Brenda Cook, Stampin' Up!, cardI used Chocolate Chip for the card base and layered a piece of Kraft CS next and then attached a piece of the Welcome Neighbor DSP Pack.

Next, I punched out all of the pieces for the owl – Head: Round Tab Punch, Chocolate Chip; Wings: Scallop Circle Punch, 1-Chocolate Chip, 1-Kraft; Body: 1-3/4″ Circle Punch, Chocolate Chip; Eyes: 1/2″ Circle Punch, Regal Rose; Feet and Nose: Boho Blossoms Punch, Only Orange.

Then I began the process of putting the owl together. I attached the feet to the back of the body and adhered it to the DSP. Then I put the wings together by offsetting them a bit and adhered them to the body. Next I adhered the nose, face and eyes. I used a couple of wiggle eyes to give it some added pizzaz! I applied some white dots on the wings with the Signo Gel Pen. Lastly, I stamped the sentiment.

The Welcome Neighbors DSP Pack is only available during Sale-A-Bration. HURRY, this offer ends March 31.

Chocolate Bunny

Chocolate Bunny, Solid Stripes, Teeny Tiny Wishes, Stampin' Up!, CARDScraps, Brenda Cook, Easter, handmade card
I know..I know..it is too early for Easter, but the Chocolate Bunny single stamp from the Occasions mini catalog was begging for my attention! I also tried out my first Mojo Monday sketch challenge with this card.

Cardscraps How I Did It Tutorial Header

Chocolate Bunny, Solid Stripes, Teeny Tiny Wishes, Stampin' Up!, CARDScraps, Brenda Cook, Easter, handmade card First, I cut my paper. I chose Pretty in Pink for the card base. Then I cut a piece of Barely Banana and Whisper White, each at 3-3/4″ x 5".” Then I did my stamping on Whisper White scraps. I also used scraps for the punched striped square, scalloped oval and the large oval.

Next, I used the Big Shot and the Petals a Plenty Texture folder on the Whisper White and used the Polka Dots Texture Folder on the Bashful Blue oval. Then I rubbed (with my fingers) the Stampin’ Pastels over the flowers. Don’t worry, your fingers will come clean with some soap and water!

Next, you will need to cut your ribbon and thread your buttons. Then start playing around with positioning your components and then start adhering everything layer by layer. I used dimensionals under the bunny and a glue dot under the buttons.

Happy Valentine’s Day

12610_Valentine (550x136)
I spend a fair amount of time surfing the net – looking for inspiration. I normally take good notes, but on this one I failed to denote where my inspiration was derived from. Nonetheless, stamping with the Thoughts & Prayers stamp set is always good for the creative mind because it is extremely versatile.

Cardscraps How I Did It Tutorial Header

Thoughts & Prayers, Teeny Tiny Wishes, Stampin' Up!, valentine, hearts, card, Brenda Cook, CARDScrapsCut a standard card base out of Whisper White CS and score in the middle at 5-1/2.” Next cut another piece of Whisper White CS at 3-3/4″ x 3-3/4,” which will be used for the image area. Go ahead and stamp the branch with Old Olive ink and set aside.

Then cut the Basic Black CS to 4-1/4″ x 1-1/4″ and adhere the ribbon/bow to it (see photo), which should be adhered to the left side of the card base.

Still using the Basic Black CS, I cut a 1″ x 11″ piece out for the border trim and made the “fancy dancy” punched scalloped border trim and snipped to 3-3/4″ sections and glued them to the backside of the image panel, so that only the scallops were showing. Then take the Stamping Pastels and a q-tip and gently swirl some light blue on the top and light green on the bottom. Adhere to the card base centered in the remaining white space. Take the Black Journaling Pen and carefully stroke the outer sides of the panel, which gives you a defined image area.

Then it is time to place some hearts on the branch. I took some Real Red CS and ran it through the Big Shot with the Perfect Polka Dots Textured Impressions Folder and then I punched various heart sizes and adhered with glue dots. Lastly, you will need to stamp your sentiment.

Stamping with Kids – Part 1

General

Cards created by Lianne Carper using the Love Bug stamp set by Stampin' Up!Before we talk about the cards I’m showing today, I’d like to give you a little history – or a little insight anyway.  I come from a long line of crafters.  My grandparents were crafters, my aunts are all crafters, my mom is a crafter.  As far back as I can remember, my mother was teaching me some sort of craft.  I learned to crochet, sew, weave, paint, draw, do needlepoint, rug hook, sculpt, cross stitch, you name it.  When I was a kid in the 70’s, my mother sold for a direct sales craft company called Arts & Crafts Concepts and to this day, I still have some of the needlework kits in my sewing box.  So, of course, it’s only natural for me to want to teach my daughter all things crafty!

Cards created by Lianne Carper using the Love Bug stamp set by Stampin' Up!For the last couple of Christmases, she has gotten crafty kits.  Beading kits where she makes her own necklaces and bracelets, Perler bead kits where she lays out the little beads on trays and we melt them with the iron, her very own stamping kits, rug hooking kits and she has even made her own tied fleece blanket and throw pillow.  A few months ago, she turned 6 and has stepped up to play with my stamps and tools now – with my supervision, of course.

For about the last 6 months or so, Brenda and Lexi have been sending cards back and forth.  Lexi just loves getting cards from Brenda – I can’t tell you how excited she gets.  And when it comes time to make a card, you ask her who her card is for and it’s either for Brenda or her dad.  I rarely get a card, however, most of the coloring book pages she colors are for me.  So I’m not left out totally.LOL.  The last time Lexi went to NC with me to visit Brenda, auntie Brenda bought her her very own scrapping bag!  We’re not talking some kid size bag either – this is an adult scrapping bag.  So every now and then, I pick her up some supplies to go in her own bag – and it’s FULL now!

Cards created by my 6 year old daughter Alexis using the Love Bug stamp set by Stampin' Up!Anyway, the other day I started working on the card kits for the nursing home and she wanted to make some cards.  So I figured I’d let her make one from a kit and I would make a stepped up version of it to show here on the blog.  You can see mine above – it has the Rich Razzleberry Grosgrain Ribbon.  You can see hers to the right with the Whisper White Taffeta Ribbon.  I did stamp her bug and her sentiment and cut all of the papers for her, but all  of the assembly and coloring was done by her.  I think she did a fabulous job.  She made the decision to flip the designer paper in the middle over to the other side to show the light lavender print and she also decided that she wanted her stamped image on the bottom half of the card.

I was so impressed with how even she got her designer paper strips lined up.  It’s not an easy task for an experienced crafter and while they are not perfect, they’re pretty darn good!

She asked me if I was putting my card on my website and I told her yes.  She asked me with the cutest little expression, “Can you put mine on there too?”  How can I say no?  I was going to anyway because I was so proud of her but her asking was just too cute.

Here’s a shot of our cards side by side.   You can click on the images to view them a little larger.  If I hadn’t told you, would you think the one on the right was made by a 6 year old?  I don’t think so.

Cards created by Lianne Carper and her daughter Alexis using the Love Bug stamp set by Stampin' Up!

Cards created by Lianne Carper using the Love Bug stamp set by Stampin' Up!Oh – here’s a quick tip.  If you don’t have any matching floss or twine for your buttons, you can carefully tie tiny strips of paper through the button holes.  Since these buttons are glued on and not sewn on, the paper threads are only decorative so they don’t have to be strong.  Click on the picture to zoom in and get a closer look.

I hope you’ll join me tomorrow for Part 2 when I show off another card that my 6 year old daughter made with me.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Happy Stamping :)

Day 8 – Upsy Daisy

General

2009_12_4_UpsyDaisy (1) (550x203)

Today we bring you another CASEd card by carol_PA925.  This one was a doozy, but upon completion of our making multiple cards on this one, we were pleased.

We made the card bases out of So Saffron and Pretty in Pink CS and took Baroque Motifs and stamped on the card base with Whisper White craft ink and dried it with the heat gun to keep from smearing the ink.  NOTE: Craft inks take longer to dry. Then we cleaned the stamp and used Basic Black ink to strategically stamp again on the So Saffron CS. Even though this ink dries pretty quickly, we opted to use the heat gun on it also, as we did not want to take any chances of it smearing.

We then used black embossing powder and the heat gun on the Upsy Daisy stamp to use as the focal point. The sentiment(s) came from the Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set.

Well, we have one more full day of Lianne’s visit to Tarboro. I wish she was here all of the time, as I thoroughly enjoy creating regularly when she is around. She definitely inspires me and quite often gets me out of my "comfort zone” with new techniques. It is really cool to watch how she approaches her creative endeavors.

We will showcase a new project tomorrow and have a special treat coming up for you after that – so stay tuned!

Halloween Build-a-Bear

General

HalloweenBAB2 002 (550x133)

imageBoo!  Did I scare you?  Just kidding.  With a few of my recent posts being about Christmas, I bet you thought I skipped right over Halloween.  Well, I kinda did – but not on purpose.  I don’t currently have a lot of Halloween stamps, so I moved right on by it.  However, the mood struck me today when I started thinking about what I wanted to do for this week’s Mojo Monday sketch challenge – which of course, I didn’t do on Monday [ooops!].

This one wasn’t near as hard for me to figure out what I wanted to do as last week’s, but still it’s somewhat complex.  One of the things that I like about their sketches is the multitude of layers.  A single layer card is really hard for me to get into.  Not that there isn’t the occasion one that strikes my fancy, but I’d much rather see lots of layers and lots of dimension!

Before I get too far along, I’ll go ahead and mention that I did a lot of paper piecing on my little gal!  And since I’ve started making my cards in multiples, I snapped a photo of my teeny tiny cut pieces.  You can see on the black cutting matte that each of those squares are 1/2″, so those little  flowers are like under 1/4″.  Some of these pieces are itsy bitsy!!!  Welcome to my world of insanity – and yes, I did have to put my glasses on!

HalloweenBAB1 003

Some of you may know that Stampin’ Up! has a Halloween die so you can dress up your die cut Build-a-Bears.  However, I don’t have the dies, so I had to come up with my own Halloween getup.  Well, she may not be a pumpkin, a witch or Hannah Montana, but she sure is cute in her Halloween dress.  And if she came to my door, I’d give her a treat!

HalloweenBAB2 002

Here’s how I did it:

First, I cut all of my rectangles for the background blocks.  Each one was mounted on Basic Black card stock and then stitched with black thread on my sewing machine.  I used designer papers from three different paper packs, the top orange blocks are from the Sweet Always paper pack which is retired.  The bottom orange blocks are from Pawsitively Prints paper pack and the black blocks are from the Night & Day Specialty paper pack – both of which debuted in the Holiday Mini Catalog

HalloweenBAB1 001My little bear was colored using the Creamy Caramel Stampin’ Write marker and then I sponged a little bit of Close to Cocoa and Chocolate Chip ink on her to add a bit of dimension.  I also sponged some Cameo Coral on her cheeks.  I masked her little body and sponged some So Saffron around her and then did the edges with Pumpkin Pie.  Here’s a view of what she looked like after everything was sponged but before any paper piecing started.  Not very pretty right now, is she?

HalloweenBAB2 009 I then cut her muzzle out of Whisper White card stock and sponged the edges using More Mustard.  Her dress and flower were cut out of the Pawsitively Prints orange print paper.  Her bodice and bottom ruffle were cut from the Night & Day Specialty paper as were her shoes.  I opted to cut them from the designer paper rather than just black card stock because it was a little bit lighter black.  Trust me, stamping black on black is hard to see to cut out and you need a little variation in the color.  Her bag was stamped on Whisper White and colored with markers.

I mounted the bear onto the card base using Dimensionals.  The little button embellishment was made by cutting a piece of the Night & Day Specialty polka dot paper with the 1-1/4″ circle punch and layering it with a 1″ Pumpkin Pie card stock circle and then a black button tied with SU!’s Gingham Ribbon.  I tied Basic Black 5/8″ Grosgrain Ribbon in a bow and mounted it to the left side using a Glue Dot.HalloweenBAB2 005  I stamped Happy Halloween from the Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set (#115370) in the bottom right corner.

I opted for the Kraft card base just for a little bit of the country feel.  Because it’s light, I didn’t feel the need to put a piece of paper for the sentiment on the inside.  Instead, I opted for just a couple of thin strips of designer paper near the bottom to finish it off.  There’s still plenty of room for a stamped or handwritten sentiment above it.

Shhhh!  I have a little secret for you.  In just 2 more days, Stampin’ Up! is going digital!!  I know several of our friends here at CARDScraps are very familiar with digital scrapbooking and now, we’re going to have the best of both worlds with the release of My Digital Studio.  The software is packed with many of the SU! products you’ve come to love.  And for those of you who are already digital scrapbooking and don’t need another scrapbooking, card making, calendar creating, movie making program (whew – that was a mouth full), you’ll be happy to know that you can purchase just the digital files to use in your current program!  Watch for more info over the next couple of days!

Happy Stamping!
