Lightbulb Two for Tuesday

Bare with me as today’s post is going to be a long one.  However, since I’m showing you two different cards using the same design, I think you’ll be able to make it through.  Remember that you can click on these cards to get a closer look.

While looking around the internet recently, I came across a card created by Beate Johns that I fell in love with.  Her card didn’t use anything from Stampin’ Up!, but that didn’t stop me from using it for my inspiration.  You can see her original card here.

I tried a few different birthday sentiment stamps and they just weren’t bold enough for the look I was going for, so I settled on one from the Bring on the Cake stamp set which is new in the 2011 Occasions Mini Catalog.

I searched through my designer paper and decided to use papers from two paper packs that I would never have thought to use together – Play Date and Love Letter.  When you’re looking at a paper pack, it’s hard to envision it with papers outside of that paper set because everything there coordinates so perfectly.  But when you look at each sheet individually, you can start seeing how they will work with papers from other sets.

Normally, when I’m creating cards, I make more than one.  However, on the second one, I decided to change it up a bit.  With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I had to make one with the red heart paper from Play Date as well.  I had forgotten all about this cute heart paper, so I’m glad I went searching for some Tempting Turquoise designer paper.

Now, if you’ve zoomed in on either of these photos, you may have noticed that the zig-zag “stitching” is stamped.  Where did that come from?  I promise you that it is a current Stampin’ Up! stamp.  If you check out the 2011 Occasions Mini Catalog on page 34, you’ll see it.  That’s right, it’s the In Stitches Jumbo Wheel.  I knew before I even ordered that wheel that I was planning on cutting it apart as soon as it arrived.  I knew that it was going to be rare that I would want to use all of those stitches at the same time, so when it got here, I began stamp surgery.dun, dun, dun!  Here’s a better look for ya.

If you check the rubber stamp out that’s on the wheel, you’ll notice that there is a little seam.  You can use a Hobby Blade to start separating it, but once started, it will pull apart easily.  Simply peel the rubber off of the wheel.  Now, before cutting the stitching lines apart, I went ahead and applied some of the Aleene’s Tack it Over Again adhesive to the entire backside and let it dry.  Then I flipped it over and stuck it to my cutting mat.  I used a metal ruler and the Hobby Blade to carefully cut between the lines of stitching.  So now I have 6 different stitching line stamps for a whopping $8.50!  Talk about a bargain!  I used Clear-Mount Block I to stamp with and they do hang off just a bit – but that’s ok.  You can either trim the stitching line to fit on the block, or do like I do and just let it hang off.

So those of you who are still with me, I hope it was worth the read!  We’ve got two different cards using the same design and same papers sets.

Happy Stamping

Thanks for the cards Lianne. Love them, #10 size? I picked up some #10 red envys on mark down, so that would work.

These are actually 3" x 6" made from a 6"x6" piece of card stock. They fit in the small open-end envelopes that SU sells (like coin envelopes you get from the bank). Although a #10 would work fine too. I want to make some that size myself.
